| Post subject: | Bamboo, viscose and microfleece |
Many cloth diapers and inserts are made og totally or partial of bamboo, viscose or microfleece. How do I wash these materials best. What water temperature are recommended. 60°c? 90°c? And how do these materials react to the dryer? Appreciate all possible good answers |

I've been researching about laundering microfiber cloth, and 3 things stand out. 1. Cold or warm water only 2. Bare minimum of detergent 3. Low drying temperature This is for dusting rags, so it may be slightly different for diapers. |

Is it safe to wash diapers at lower temperature? Will it be bacteria left in them, and what about smell? |

Optimist, Your concerns about diapers made from fibers other than cotton reinforce my decision to use cotton diapers exclusively. Newer fabrics may eventually surpass cotton, but that will take time. |

I got the recommendation warm but not hot. What does that mean? 40°c? 60°c? I do not want to guess wrong and ruin everything |

I contacted adultclothdiaper about their bamboo inserts. They can be washed up to 120°f or ca 50°c. As bamboo is a form of viscose i guess this can apply to other viscose products. What worries me a little is that most bacteria are killed at 60°c or 140°f |

Detergent removes bacteria, but does not kill them. If antibiotic measures seem necessary, I use Clorox or another similar product. |

Over time I get that diaper funk smell. I’m guessing it is caused by soap, bacteria and ammonia buildup. I wash about every other day and rinse twice. I use just enough soap to see a few suds during the wash cycle. Early on I noticed I was using way too much soap, even though it was the manufacture’s recommended amount….more you use, more you buy? /-: Too much soap seems to result in rapid soap buildup even with double rinse cycles. Micro fleece warnings I've seen say do not use chlorine bleach to wash! Guessing that is because it is composed of some sort of chlorinated plastic material? I have read several articles about striping cloth diapers. Only method I’ve found that actually works is very hot water and bleach(Clorox). Problem is bleach breaks down cotton fibers and accelerates wear. Has anyone found an effective substitute for regular old bleach or an effective striping method that doesn’t damage cotton diapers? |

I use cotton diapers not any of the semi-synthetics. This is a hard water area so that has to be taken into account also. Laundry "detergent" is liquid Free and Clear about 3/4 of what the washing machine manufacturer recommends for the load size. Borax to deal with the water hardness. Oxiclean Free powder, a bit generous. Top loading machine. The medium temperature setting on this machine is pretty hot. Run the full White cycle then loosen up the load which is spun solidly against the tub wall. Set up a medium length cycle and add 2-3 cups of distilled white vinegar as the water (warm) is filling. Run the full cycle. Use the dryer medium cycle. I have never has to strip my diapers; no odor and always white. Hope this helps. Stan |
