Interesting comparison of past and present...products, names, procedures, etc.
This jogs my memory a bit, too.

Going back into the mid-60's -- my lady-friend then was dealing with night incontinence (enuresis) mainly
which was related to polio she had as a child. Her products included Bittner, Kleinerts and a few others
I cannot remember. These were rubber products. There were Sani-Pants even then, they were a laminate
with a plastic coating inside rayon outside and snaps. These were not too useful and didn't hold up.

Another source for rubber and plastic/vinyl incontinence pants then was either Sears or Wards mail-order
catalogs. Also a product for youth advertised in magazines a lot and mail order: "Stay-Dry" pants with
ties at the side, plastic/vinyl outer with a flannel lining and ties at the sides. Not very absorbant.

Actually her best source for a durable and effective overpant was via hospital supply at a large polio clinic
where she went for checkups. There she would pickup (with a prescription) a supply of hospital-grade
rubber pants designed for durability and institutional use. These were heavy and noisy, but most leakproof
when used over cloth and her preference simply because they worked, lasted a long time, though totally bulky
and very 'clinical' looking. Cannot remember the color...probably off white or pink.

The name Bittner existed even into the early 90's when I began to experience inco issues. These were possibly
old stock items still available at some hospital supply outlets (not mail order). Another company offered rubber
and plastic pants by mailorder...but turned out to be more fetish-oriented material and not good quality. I know
Sani-Pants were still on the market, possibly even Kleinerts old stock. And the Sears catalog was also a limited
option for ordering vinyl bloomers...but quality was questionable with sewed seams that leaked, and leg bands
that dug into the skin after a few hours of wear.

As to scents...my first disposable useage was of ATTENDS and their first products for adults were heavily scented
to the point it reminded me of an automobile air freshener! Back in the 60's, the scent I remember was the powders
and lotions my girlfriend used in combination with her night-time protection or rare day-time use, too. Lavender
and Cashmere Bouquet, fancy that!

Those are the memories I can recover.

john1050: your post I also remember those names.
I grew up in the late 40s 50s and 60s at a local yacht club and one of my friends had polio and she was also incontinent. She was the first person I came in contact with that was incontinent but not the last. At age 14yrs old I started to scuba dive and the man that taught me was shot three times in World War II. He was paralyzed from the waist down and totally incontinent. I spent many hours with him he was a nice person ho taught me a lot.
It is funny I can remember those things at that time I was healthy no problems and their disability did not bother me at all. I am glad you brought it up I spent several hours remembering the people I met back then great memories.

I can remember that people back then also had a bad outlook at people that had a disability and would talk about them behind there back things have not changed much.
I feel a better person for knowing them sorry to say they both have passed on.

There was also an orphanage near where we lived they were big back then. I met a boy my age that lived there. One day he took me in to look around there were long halls with beds on both sides. I saw bedding under several of beds and I asked him why. He said any bed with bedding on the floor the kid’s bed wet and was made to sleep on the floor.

2lyle:

Social and institutional prejudice has been a barrier (still is) that can prevent
non-disabled people from meeting and knowing those with disability, incontinence,
or both.

Sad but true.

I've recently acquired a terry toweling diaper square. I know they're basically the same material as towels but I'm a very big girl and most towels don't really fit me for use as diapers. Besides, I just prefer the idea of having my diapers stay purely diapers (although I'll admit, when it's clean and dry the 60" square of terry towelling looks very inviting after a bath... :P). I worried it would feel scratchy against my skin but honestly it didn't!

I find I get a lot of bulk on the hips, and minimal bulk on the crotch (like, 2 layers), so I usually get a couple of old towels (now relegated to diaper stuffers :P), and fold them up and use them as stuffers, with a sheet of muslin over the top for more comfort. It just feels weird to me (and I suspect I don't get as much absorbency) to not have much material between my legs and have so much on my hips/rump.

The biggest advantage I can see of using terry squares is that I can dry them/have them out around the house without anybody questioning it. They simply look like towels. If I didn't find pinning a little bit of a hassle I'd surely use these regularly. I don't usually line dry my cloth diapers as we have low fences, but with these there's nothing to be worried about. Giant towel =/= nappy to most people.

I'm wondering if anyone knows of a cheap place in the UK to get diaper squares of any material? Big ones, as I don't think the regular size would work for me.

I've never used terry towels for diapers but I have used diapers for towels. I was on a 4-day camping trip with friends a few years ago and I forgot to pack a couple towels for drying off after showers. I had cloth diapers along for use at night (I wore less bulky disposables during the day) so I used diapers to dry off after my showers. I slept in my own tent so there wasn't a problem being discrete. I put my wet cloth diapers in small scented garbage bags and then in a large garbage bag until I would get home. I would put used disposables in bags and then in trash containers so I wouldn't need to drag them home too. I've have thought about using terrycloth towels for diapers but thought they might be too-rough and scratchy on the skin. If you used fabric softener when you wash them they would lose absorbancy.
