We don't have the same choice over here in the UK but I certainly endorse the principle. As long as the plastic pants are the right size and have enough room for nappy (diaper in the USA) then you should be fine. I don some fine tuning adding more if I have had more to drink and so forth. Once you are familiar with how things work this is quite easy,

When I go away and have to use disposables I find the capacity available is rather reduced so one needs to watch the amount drunk to avoid a flood. :D

I spent years coming up with a cloth diaper that I trust. I started out with disposables but did not like waking up with a partially wet disposable diaper and a wet bed. I started trying cloth diapers at night. I tried all-in-one diapers, pull-on cloth diapers, contour cloth diapers, prefold diapers and my better half even made me several quality flannel diapers. After all of that I now use flat birdseye weave diapers. I layer them with doubled over diapers in the center for soakers. By layering them I can dial in on the absorbancy that I need. At night I wear a more layered diaper than in the day. Another advantage of using flat fold diapers is they dry so much faster than every other cloth diaper that I have tried. They seem to last longer because they don't get so beat up in the dryer. I still use disposable diapers when travelling and lately at my new job but I am planning on trying cloth at work as well.

Finding correct fitting plastic pants is a must. This took me almost as long as finding the right cloth diaper for me. I tried Comco but the small pant was too-small for me and I pretty much swam in the medium size pants. I understand that they now have in-between sizes such as small/medium. Comco makes a quality plastic pant and are considered the best amoung many incontinent people.

I tried VIP (Vinyl Incontinent Products) but they are no longer in business. They had a plastic pant that was exactly like the old Gerber Baby Pants. The crotch was too-narrow and the vinyl turned brittle way too soon.

I tried Babykins plastic pants. I liked the fit and the elastics are very gentle but the embossed (textured) vinyl on the outside of the pant gave me chaffing. I think Babykins also makes plastic pants in heavier, smoother vinyls.

I currently use Leakmaster plastic pants from Adult Cloth Diaper. I use both pull-on and snap-on styles. They have a 12" wide crotch and the vinyl seems to stay softer longer than some other brands that I have used. Their medium size fits me perfectly. A proper fitting plastic pant can be the difference between leaks and no leaks. ACD also sells a plastic pant with a heavier vinyl and enclosed elastics. I know there are a few people on this board that use and like the heavier pants. I purchased a pair but just do not care for the vinyl covered elastics.

Adult Cloth Diaper, LL Medico, Vinylwear, Plastic Pants.com, Angelfluff, etc... all get their plastic pants from a wholesale company named Gary so many of the same pants are available from multiple companies. Gary pants used to have a reputation of having agressive elastics (too-tight). I used to have a couple pairs that were this way but that was many years ago and I have not witnessed tight elastics since. Leakmaster plastic pants are about as comfortable as a plastic pant can be.

As a cloth diaper wearer,my cloth prefolds come from Montainview.Great price and a great diaper. I use the 2-4-2 daytime diaper size large. If at times I need a thicker diaper, put two together. They dry quicker and with the warm weather they smell great.
As for waterproof panties,Fetwear has the best.I get the high back,ET..extra thick full cut pantie.WOW a great LONG lasting pant.Air dry these and they last a long time.No problem even with the hot days. Great colors too!!

Hi Clothbaby,

Thanks for your first post and welcome to the forum! By layering your diapers as you do, you can use thinner diapers that wash and dry quicker. Long drying times cost money.
Fetware has a great selection of plastic pants or panties. I like colors too, and accidently used the wrong color code and have a pair of lavendar plastic pants. They're a nice color, but they look a little too feminine to me. I'm afraid my wife may steal them from me.
Again, thanks for the post! .................Paul Martin

You've received great advice; not much I can add except ...... I think pins are a problem for newbies!

Those of us who have been cloth diapering for some time have come to terms with pinning prefolds and that certainly is a comfortable and leak free diaper......but getting the hang of pins and getting a prefold to fit comfortably pinned on, is in my opinion, a process that takes time and experience.

I want to recommend two things; Velcro hook and loop fastening and the Snappies.

I think a great cloth diaper for day or night can be made up starting with a KINS or Indisposable / My lil miracle diaper. A contour diaper that goes on just like the disposable you are used to....assuming you use a tape on disposable diaper, of course. Just instead of peeling and applying tapes you are peeling and applying hook and loop strips from the rear wings of the diaper to the front. Boosting with cloth baby diapers affords you the oportunity to adjust absorbancy for day and night use, tho I hesitate to really recommend the contour diaper for night use when you say lots of fluids and heavy overnight voiding.

So back to prefolds which are hard to beat....adding flat diaper boosters as mentioned by others already, for overnight and waking in the morning in a dry bed. And enter Snappies....little rubber bungie cords, really. I can put on a prefold for night wear boosted with flat diapers standing up. A nice convenience. Holding the diaper between my back and the wall....just like the disposable, and reach down and pull up the prefold between my legs and pull the rear wings around and hook them with a bungie and stretch it across the front and hook to the front. I do use two on each side and I cut off the stem part of the "T" as I've found that pretty much useless but others disagree. Certainly something to look into for pretty much instant sucess compared with pins which I feel take time to "learn" and come with painful and often bloody, finger sticks along the way.....<grin>
